A Little Too Early

Rico is ready to wake the sun. Pip is still asleep.

Rico stepped onto his favourite stone, stood up tall and took a deep breath.

Then he noticed Pip, asleep beside Oszi.

Mila turned quietly towards him.

Rico let his breath out slowly.

‘Cock-a-doodle-doo,’ he whispered, very softly.

Pip did not stir. One of Oszi’s ears twitched.

The sun rose all the same.

Rico nodded with satisfaction.

‘Good. It heard me, then.’
