Read an excerpt

Tündi nodded. Even she could put that much into words. A painting. A book. Two identical dates that might be connected.

She did not mention the brown envelope.

She took out her phone and opened the messages she had exchanged with her father. She stared at the empty field for a long time, then typed:

Do you know a man called András Szalai?

She sent it before she could change her mind.

The others were already dividing up the next day’s tasks. Eszter took the missing page of the letter, Bálint the newspaper report. Nóra turned to Tündi.

“Would you look at the markings on the picture with me?”

“Of course.”

The phone screen lit up.

Mihály: Where did you see that name?

Tündi was still composing her reply when another message arrived.

Mihály: Who have you talked to about this?

She pressed her thumb against the edge of the screen. If her father did not know the name, why didn’t he say so?
