Self-portrait – I’m Home
A winter evening, two dogs curled up against me, and the moment when I finally feel at home in myself, too.
The story, in my own words
You know, when I stumble home, I often bring all the day’s troubles with me. I’m still composing replies in my head and running through tomorrow’s to-do list. Then I finally sink down, and within seconds my two dogs take charge: the big black one burrows straight under my arm, while the little white one wriggles and turns until there’s just enough room between us.
Outside, snow is falling quietly. The fire fills the room with a warm glow, and my fingers gradually come to rest on their soft fur. First one of them lets out a long, contented sigh, then the other. The third deep sigh is mine.
If I could keep just one memory or picture of myself in which I’m most truly me, this is the one I would choose: sitting with my head bowed, completely at ease, with these two wonderful little beings nestled against me. Tomorrow’s worries can wait. These are the moments when I feel that, at last, I’m truly home.
AT HOME IN AN INTERIOR
A quiet moment on the wall
Cream and sand-coloured surfaces bring out the artwork’s blues and golden lines. I imagine it in a living room, a reading corner or a quiet, personal place to unwind.
